It still happens to me every time. Every day starts out the same. My attention is on the mechanics of setting up, taking off, and flying safely. I get in the air and feel the conditions, fly around a little, fly by the people watching, etc. And then there's a moment in every flight when my awareness of the world around hits me like ton of bricks. Something in my soul gets stirred, and I wake up to the fact that I'm experiencing an amazing, surreal situation - it still happens to me every single time. There's always a moment when I get stunned. Every flight. It's not just the view. It not just the feeling of flight. It's not just the adrenaline rush from rockin around. It's not just the escape from normal life. I'm sure it is a combination of all those things, but it's all those things mixed in with a heavy dose of magic dust. It's that magic which makes this more than just fun for me. There's always a mystical moment in every flight that really gets to me in a deep way. No matter how routine this becomes, there's always some special instant that sneaks up and smacks me over the head. It's a deeply moving, perspective shattering experience that stops my train of thought in its tracks. Tonight, I know I actually said "Wow" out loud as it struck me how beautiful the view - and the sensation of flying through it - was. That was a powerful moment. A moving realization that rocked my world. The kind of memorable experience that most people hope to have just a few times in their lives. And somehow, it still happens to me every single time. I really haven't felt this kind of pure overwhelming fascination, a real sort of joy just about being alive, since I was a little kid. I know that sounds stupid and corny, but it's true - that's what this does for me. I had 3 flights, about 2 hours of air time tonight. I can't wait to see what the newspaper man writes about us. I'm sure he'll do a good job explaining it, but somehow, like everyone else, I'm pretty sure he won't get anything about what it's really like to be up there, or anything about that powerful experience I have every time :) I wish everyone had a chance to feel this. - Nick Antonaccio |
